Children reading books

Right to Read is a national programme to promote literacy and reading development for people of all ages and backgrounds. Each year we facilitate programmes designed to support adults, families and children in reading and learning.

Children’s Programmes

Spring Into Storytime is held during the month of April. Each library hosts storytimes for pre school and primary school aged children throughout the month.

Summer Stars is held from June 1 – August 31. It is aimed at children up to the age of twelve. Children are encouraged to participate by setting reading goals, recording their reading progress and participate in free activities such as workshops, story times and book clubs.

Children’s Book Festival occurs during the month of October. It consists of a full programme of visits from authors and illustrators to libraries during school hours. Schools are invited to participate by bringing classes to the library to attend the workshops and talks.

Family Time at Your Library occurs during the month of December. It consists of a series of free workshops and story time events at family friendly times such as evenings and weekends.

My Little Library is a book gifting scheme where ‘Little Library Book Bags’ are made available to children who are due to start school in September. The bags can be collected for free by families and carers from their nearest library. Each bag contains books and information for parents and guardians of children who are starting school, to help them to prepare for this big step. Each child will also get their first library card when they collect the bag.

Each My Little Library Book Bag contains:

  • Three books on starting school, making friends and being comfortable to be yourself
  • A story card on going to the library
  • A postcard the child can write or draw on and send to their new teacher, or bring to give to the teacher on their first day at school
  • Their very own library card and special ‘My Little Library’ cardholder

This project has also been extended to include the Little Books at Bedtime which consists of specially selected bedtime story books for all children aged four years and under.

Book bags are available in both Irish and English.
