I just stumbled across this and thought it was worth sharing. Although I know of no family connection between myself and Father Murphy, this article now has pride of place in my "Too good to throw away" file.

Thanks for that article on Fr. Murphy. I made his acquaintance when I transcribed the baptisms he recorded (in Latin of course) between 1818 and 1831 . For more on Fr. Clare Journal, Mon 31 Dec 1866:

The receipt of five pounds for the poor of Corofin; from Mr Patrick Spellissy, of Philadelphia, is thankfully acknowledged by Dr Macnamara. This like the sum was sent on several former occasions by him for the same benevolent purpose. Mr Spellissy expresses his intention of continuing this Christmas offering as long as Providence leaves him the means. This is another instance of Irishmen prospering in America not forgetting the claims of the poor of their native county. The kindly disposition of this gentleman is fairly inherited, being the nephew to the patriotic and highly distinguished Irishman, the lamented Fr John Murphy, P P, Corofin.
