An 1887 publication (attached in pdf format) by the Chicago Police Fund entitled History of the Chicago Police (authors: John Joseph Flinn, John Elbert Wilkie), now a Google book, provides biographical information on these Clare-born men and some sons, with full birth dates for most:

Patrick McCarthy 1853
James Mernan 1850
Simon McMahon 1850
Daniel Hogan 1843
Patrick Donovan 1835
Martin Quinn 1847

sons of Clare-born:
John Bonfield b. 1836 New Brunswick, Canada
possibly Clare origin:
John J. Meany b. 1850 Burlington VT

Adding this death news that refers to Chicago policeman Morgan O'Connell. I believe this item already has been posted to various Irish-related message boards. I have not yet looked into Morgan O'Connell, but I may well do that some time.
