Portill family, County Clare

Hi all, i'm new here, i'm hoping some one can help me with my maternal 2x gt grandmother and her family born
Co, Clare.
my maternal 2x gt grandmother was Jane Portill born abt 1832 Co Clare,
here parents were Simon Portill & Mary Portill { not yet found her maiden name }

Simon & Mary Portill's children
Jane Portill b 1832
Michael Portill b 1838
Mary Portill b 1838/9
Bridget Portill b 1844
James Portill b 1846
Thomas Portill b 1850.

Jane Portill married Michael Murphy 1860, Pateley Bridge, Yorkshire
{ Jane's father Simon Portill shown as deceased and was a farmer }
Simon & Mary Portill's children married in the Yorkshire area.

Two Marriages took place at St Senan's Parish, Kilrush, Co, Clare
2nd February 1831.
Simon Portill Carnacolla father John Portill
to
Mary Shelly Thurastown father Jn Shelly

14th February 1831
John Portill
to Mary Lynch father Thos Lynch

Please can any one help me with these Portill's.

They had the following children baptised in Kilrush, Bridget 18/5/1834, Mary 23/11/1836, Catherine 5/8/1839, Sinon 7/2/1845, Margaret 14/7/1847, Patrick 14/4/1849.

Hello, thanks for reply, yes iv'e seen my Portill's as Purtill/Purtle and never realy know which one's right way to write it,
so the Simon Purtill & Mary Shelly you have posted are not my Purtill's, i was so hoping id'e found Jane Purtill's family,
Please could any one advise me how to go about finding Simon & Mary Purtill, all of thier children that iv'e named are shown as born Ireland { hoping all born Clare }
Any help or advice greatly appreciated.

There were no less than three Simon/Sinon Purtills having children baptised in the adjoining Kilkee parish in the same time period, but again the names don't fit:

wife Nancy Normile, children Margt 1837, Patrick 1839, Michael 1844

wife Mary Learey, children Mary 1838, Ally 1840

wife Mary McGrath, children Ellen 1839, Michael 1841, Elizabeth 1844, Ann 1846.

Thank you for time and kindness in looking and replying, i must admit i'm now completely lost, i thought it would be easy to find my Purtill's, is Purtill found in one area of Co Clare or through out the county.
I was sent several Purtill documents:

Tithes for Monmore, Kilrush 1826
Simon Purtill.

Evictions in the Kilrush Union 1849 enclosure 63
Simon Purtill
No in family 7, 4 males, 3females

Would it be possible my Simon is amongst these, forgive my ignorance on Tithes & Griffiths documents
but i'm out of my depth here.

The Simon Purtill who was evicted on 2 May 1849 had been living in Derryard in the civil parish of Killard (which was then the same area as the electoral division of Killard):

Derryard is a local placename which is not recognised by the Ordnance Survey so you wont find it on most maps; however, it is on Google maps:

The Google Maps marker for Derryard is in the townland of Carrowmore South on the road from Kilrush to Doonbeg (which also goes through Moanmore):

With so many couples in west Clare named Simon and Mary Purtill, it will be difficult to identify which couple went to England, although the family evicted in 1849 is an obvious candidate. It would help if they had another child born after they arrived in England, or a child who emigrated to a jurisdiction where marriage or death certificates give mothers' maiden names.

you list spouses for five of the six children of Simon & Mary Purtill whose birth years you give above. Try posting the five marriage certificates here in case anyone else may spot a clue that you might have missed. And try posting all the English census returns for these six Purtill siblings, in case any contains a clue to a precise birthplace which you might have missed.

pwaldron, thank you for reply, yes i had some wonderful help on rootschat about my Murphy & Purtill ancestors,
at the time it was the Murphy side that had my full attention as i couldn't pin down a child from Michael & Jane Purtill's marriage, she was Margaret Murphy, my maternal gr grandmother { Margaret Murphy McIntosh }
Margaret Murphy was born 1863, in Middlesbrough, north east England.
When baptised her mother's maiden name was given as Jane Purtell.
godfather Martin Murphy & godmother Jane Eustace, this was 5th July 1863.

When i was given the help on Rootschat about the Murphy's & Purtill's i was only given information about the families,
i'm not a memeber of Ancestry and dont have access to Census returns.
I'm hoping i can attach some of the census information in the hope that other families who married into the Purtill family
might just have th einformation i'm looking for.

Hello again i should add i dont know when Simon Purtill died, on his daughter's marriage certificate it states
deceased, this was in 1860 Pately Bridge, Yorkshire, so i dont know if Simon Purtill died in Clare or England.
Iv'e attached a file with a Mary Purtil on with another file with a Simon Purtill, i dont know if they help but worth a try.

ancestry.com is not the only source of online access to census returns; even if you can't afford to pay for online access, I'm sure there is offline access to microfilms in a local library or Mormon Family History Centre somewhere near where you live.

Without copies of the census returns for the Purtill family, you have little hope of making further progress.

The marriage certificates for the Purtill siblings do not appear to be in any of the PDF files which you have uploaded.

You may find a volunteer who will search the online census returns, but it is doubtful that any volunteer will pay the GBP9.25 each for the marriage certificates which are available offline only, and on a pay-per-copy basis.

The only marriage certificate iv'e got so far is my maternal 2x great grandparents Michael & Jane Pertill, he rfather's surname
Portill, not sure if it will help though.

With up to four contemporary couples named Simon & Mary Purtill/Portill (two in Kilkee, one in Kilrush and one in England), it is vital to clearly and thoroughly document all sources to avoid confusing the children of one couple with the children of another similarly named couple.

My sources for Purtill's in Leeds come from a wonderful lady on Rootschat,
i do understand now why you would ask this after finding all the Simon & Mary Purtill's in Co Clare,
perhaps i should give this posting some more thought,
but i wont mind at all if the good folks on Clare forum would help me sort my Purtill's out.

I would like to have one more go at this, i'm attaching an 1861 census for Stammergate Ripon,
Michael Murphy and wife Jane Pertill Murphy are living { just married } there.

I know from marriage certificate Simon Purtill had died leaving his wife Mary a widow

With Michael & Jane are a family
P. Porton 24 lodger
Thomas Porton 15 traveller

Mary Porton 50 widown.

is it possible Mary Porton is Jane's mother, did enumerator spell Purtill wrong.
Did s Simon & Mary Purtill have 3 children who would match those given in 1861.

Please would some one kindly look into Mary Porton to see if she is Jane's mother.
