Ryan Thomas

Post by Fran »

I have only the death certificate to go by regarding The birth place of Thomas Ryan which was Bunratty 1835! Recently on further searching I found entries which look interesting in the County Clare Tithe Applotment Books/ Parish of Tomgraney 25th October 1827, these were:
Hickey: Mich'l Ballyquin Tomgraney: Four gardens in the old Deerpark; John Brady Esq. and his under tenants Viz. Mich'l Hicky & Ryan
Ryan: Ballyquin Tomgraney: Four gardens in the old Deerpark; John Brady Esq. and his under tenants Viz. Mich'l Hicky & Ryan. Thomas Ryan m a Nora/Sara Hickey dates unknow their son was Thomas Ryan b. 1835, so what I need to know the Applotment book how extensive is it regarding further info.

Hi Fran,
The only other information available from the Tithe Applotment Books is the amount of land held by each person/tenant, the quality of the land, and the amount of tithes due. The Books are a survey of land to ascertain how much tithes each tenant was liable for. Tithes were a percentage of income payable for the upkeep of the Church of Ireland.

Thanks for that, looks like I'm back to the start.
As all I have is he was born in Bunratty? This information could be wrong as I have not found any information on him from that area as yet!

Thanks,

Fran

Fran,
If he was born in 1835 then you might be in luck. According to the library's website the Catholic parish records for Bunratty are part of Kilnasoolagh Parish and their baptismal records began in 1828. See http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclar ... rishes.htm. It would be worth writing to the Parish Priest, Newmarket-on-Fergus, Co Clare and asking him to look up the baptismal registers for you.

You beauty!
You are fantastic just when I thought I could do no more from this end (Australia)
I find your email. I will take your advise and write to the local priest. This will tell me if his death certificate information is correct and if I'm on the right tram with tracks!! I was under the impression that not many church records were still about.
So there you go.

Thanks,

Fran,

Another approach would be to browse the LDS microfilm set entitled "Parochial registers of Newmarket (Clare), 1828-1866" (the Catholic parish of Newmarket contains the civil parishes of Bunratty, Clonloghan, Drumline, Kilconry, Kilmaleery, Kilnasoolagh, and Tomfinlough). These contain baptisms, 1829-1866, and marriages, 1828-1865. The film number is FHL BRITISH Film 926095 Item 2. See also http://www.familysearch.org/eng/library ... +Newmarket+(Clar++

You can order these microfilms to a LDS centre near you (assuming you don't live 400 miles west of Ayer's Rock, or somewhere like that).

Paddy,,
Thanks for your reply. I will do as you suggest, when I get back to Melbourne, down at the surf coast now.
Interesting you mentioned 400 miles west of Ayer's Rock (300 kilometres from Uluru) I work at a place called Docker River in the seventies which is in that direction!

Thanks once again for your help.

Fran
