Apparently the t.v. program "Who Do You Think You Are" shown on BBC maintains an online journal, which has an article on police enrollments in Manchester, Lancashire, England in the mid-1800s through early 1900s. I have quickly copied out details for the Clare-born officers.

Thanks for posting this, Sharon. In case anyone here wants to investigate their Clare ancestors who were in the Manchester police force I thought I'd just mention that the Greater Manchester Police Museum can be very helpful with searches (or certainly was to me). Ancestors of mine by the name of Partington (not from Clare) were in the Manchester police. Back in 2002 the Museum responded very fully to a request of mine ("I've found two men called Thomas Partington in our appointment registers, father and son. Details not great because it's very early. Information as follows:- Thomas Partington (senior) Appointed Constable on the 6th June 1839, joined the 'New Manchester Police Force' on the 14th October 1839, Collar Number 262, Retired 17th May 1849 due to ill health. Thomas Partington (junior) Appointed Constable 9 January 1845, Collar Number 62, 21 July 1846 promoted to Sub Inspector. 11 March 1858 Action brought against him in the City Court for injury said to have been inflicted on Margaret Cassidy by him whilst in performance of his duty. 15 April 1858 Judgement given in his favour").

The latter Thomas Partington, by the way, died on the day of his honorable and well-earned retirement from the Manchester police. He stepped off a train while it was still moving and was killed instantly.
