famine road meelick

Post by matthewmacnamara »

In the winter of 1846/ 1847 work commenced on a Famine relief road across the face of Meelick mountain,
to link the Limerick roads to Sixmilebridge and to Kilkishen. It does not appear to have been finished.
Locally the road was called the RAHL [A as in rAjah].
Would anyone have seen any documentary or journalistic reference to this work? Or to an extraordinary Grand Jury presentment
to finance it?
It would have figured in extraordinary presentments for the barony of Lower Bunratty sometime in 1846.

For what it's worth, I did look in the EPPI database for Matthew a couple of days ago but without success. There are several meaty PDFs referring to Clare famine relief, one dated 1846/47, but no mention of Meelick. I tried various combinations of the keywords "Clare", "famine", "relief" and "Meelick" but maybe there are other keywords which would be more specific.
