I came across your forum whilst I was looking for information on Scattery Island. I only recently got a copy of the marriage certificate of my great grand mother Lydia Elliot and my great grand father Richard W. Forrest dated 1873. Lydia's address is given as Scattery Island and her father (who I presume also lived there) was Thomas Elliott who she has put down as a sea captain.
We also have a family legend that he was a light housekeeper, maybe that is true as there is a lighthouse on Scattery Island but we have not been able to confirm that he worked there yet. When I find an ancestor I like to find out about the place that they lived in so I shall be reading up on County Clare. It really does look so very beautiful.
So this is just a hello and thank you for letting me look around your forum.

Re: Hello (re Lydia Elliot, Scattery Island)
Just to get you motoring until one of the Scattery Island experts pops up here on the forum to give you the full lowdown, go to http://www.clarelibrary.ie and enter "Scattery Island Elliott" into the Search slot at the top right and hit Enter. The first 'hit' will show you references to a Captain Elliott. The second 'hit' mentions a Henry Elliott in a maritime context. Go to http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclar ... attery.htm for an extensive rundown on Scattery Island. There's lots more if you just enter "Scattery Island" into the Search facility (heck, there's even a list of the lighthouse keepers at http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclar ... eepers.htm) but I won't go on as it might spoil your fun.

P.S. It was not uncommon for retired sea captains to become lighthouse keepers. Maybe this is relevant here. P.
