O'Grady Shorepark

Post by mgallery »

Hi

I just wonder if anyone has research on this family. I see this link on clare library then I have noticed some newspaper announcements I have
http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclar ... ground.htm

I have a Margaret O'Grady wife of Pierce Shannon alderman dying in the 1850s in Geraldine Lodge Limerick and then her sister who is named as daughter of Daniel O'Grady dying in 1856
There was a Daniel O'Grady of Coogy died early 1800s he had a son thomas who married and lived locally.

Paddy had pointed me in the direction of the O'Grady book by Ger Madden. I dont think Thomas was a son of Daniel O'Grady of Shorepark as stated in the Clare library article but he was probably related.

thanks

I looked again at this research and at the O'Grady book. It seems to be tying Pierce Shannon to the Kildimo Shannons

The O'Grady book has Margaret daughter of Daniel O'Grady marrying Edmond Shannon from Kildimo - I am pretty sure it was Pierce, from the death notices and I know he was from Miltown but nephew of Pierce Shannon mayor.

I have this from my information....Margaret is the widow of Edmond when she marries Pierce, the nephew of Pierce Shannon who was mayor in 1844.

Freeman's Journal dated 1.3.1841.

"on the 23rd Feb, in Limerick, Pierce Shannon, Esq. of New Orleans, North America. to Margaret, relict of Edmond Shannon, of Berry Lodge, Co. Clare"

Thanks Denis that clarifies things. Ger Maddens book seems to be quite accurate except he states Edmond is of Kildimo Limerick when in fact Kildimo or Kildeemo as it was also called is beside Annagh near Miltown. I must give Rita Meade who owns Berry Lodge a shout - she knows a lot about the history round there as she grew up there.

Ok I know that she married Pierce Shannon. This seems to be the same Pierce Shannon(2) nephew of the mayor Pierce Shannon and alderman as opposed to mayor of Limerick who lived in Geraldine lodge (where her sister Ellen O'Grady named as daughter of Daniel of shorepark lived.

This Pierce is named as being from Miltown in his fathers will

Denis I would love if you would post some of the info you have on the Shannon global business interests in the 18th century on this forum. It is truly interesting.

In Dr Matthew Potters book on Mayors of Limerick he states Pierce Shannon mayor was from West Clare but established in Limerick where according to Denis his father lived for some years. I will try to track down where the West Clare info came from but in Pierce Shannon mayors funeral report it states that his nephew Pierce Shannon(2) later alderman was from Miltown. some of his descendants added Butler to their name leading me to believe that they may descend from Margaret Butler who married Thomas Shannon.

I have early presentments 1807 (Donal de Bharra) tracked down that mention Shannons I will go back through them. I know that my gt gt gt gt grandmother was Mary Shannon daughter of thomas of Kildeemo married to Mathias Kenny.

Here are a few links related to Pierce Shannon d 1844:

This one discusses the Corbally area and Pierce Shannon's involvement in its development.

http://www.limerickcity.ie/media/Media,4064,en.pdf
This is the earliest reference I have found to him being in Limerick. He is listed as an importer of Swedish and Russian iron bar in 1811-12

http://www.limerick.ie/Archives/LCDA/Pr ... 3_5_W.djvu
This is fascinating...it is the 1856 incumbered estates listing by Patrick Aloysius Shannon, Pierce's son who died in 1858. It details their holding in Limerick City and Corbally.

Finally, the Limerick City Council Digital Archives site contains old log books from the Chamber of Commerce that contain numerous references to the business activities of Pierce Shannon, especially during the 1830's where he was involved in the trade of wheat and oats.

I also have many newspaper references in PDF and JPG that have been downloaded from papers such as the Freeman's Journal.
