New major database, for 1829

David Kenny has made a major contribution of freeholders records for
the year 1829, now posted on the Clare Library website at:

The men listed will be those having a certain level of financial security and
prosperity. However the listing of placenames and the references to
non-Clare property can be useful in the research of many other Clare
families.

I recommend scanning the list to pick up the surnames in which you are
interested. For instance, the listing of Richard Vernel at Clonderra is
likely actually the Richard Verlin known to have lived in the Tulla area
at that time.

The name which most interests me is John Bethel at North Mount
Ivers. While I know generally about Iverstown, I have not seen that
exact placename reference previously, so if someone can comment,
please do so. My current research focus is on this Bethel family,
as a Grace Bethel married with John Connell, residing at Mountholland
in the mid-1800s before disappearing.

My thanks too to David Kenny for this very substantial transcription. In it I found my putative GGGF Terence Ryan (residence Adergull, holding freehold in Adergule, this giving me two additional alternative spellings of the townland otherwise known as Addergoole or Adragoole). His townland is given in the freeholders' list as being in the barony of Bunratty but is nowadays assigned to the barony of Inchiquin.

There appear to be a number of different lists of Clare freeholders dated 1829 floating around, with some names appearing on one but not on the others:

It is probably a good idea to check all three. For example, there are seven Foleys, not including Thady, on David Kenny's list, but only four Foleys, who do include Thady, on Terry Eakin's list.
