Re: tithe Applotment papers for Gortlurkaun

Hi Jan,

The General Register Office has made Births, Deaths and Marriages available, for free, online at www.irishgenealogy.ie.
Births from 1864 to1925 (next year the cut-off point will be extended to 1926, and so forth).
Marriages from 1864 to 1950 (next year the cut-off point will be 1951 ...

Re: Calloo family

Hi George,

Yes, I looked at Griffiths and clicked on “Places” and see that there’s a Knockaun in Clonloghan and a Knockaun in Drumline, but the query was about Daniel Calloo, who lived in Tulla. The Tithe Apploment book for Tulla parish shows Dan’l Cullow, address: Knockane, Tulla Town.
There were ...

Re: tithe Applotment papers for Gortlurkaun

Hi Jan,

Good work finding that information. I found the civil (Government) record: 17 April 1864: Patrick Ryan, Carpenter, Glasduff, son of Francis Ryan, Carpenter, married Catherine Ryan, Glasduff, daughter of Michael Ryan, Farmer; witnesses: Michael Twohey, Catherine McGrath: https://www ...

Re: tithe Applotment papers for Gortlurkaun

Hi Jan
I did some searching for Elizabeth Ryan, but have given up. I see the records of her birth giving her parents as Pat Ryan and Catherine Ryan and the address as Clashduff: https://www.irishgenealogy.ie/files/civil/supp_births/2349011x.pdf. And see the record of her baptism, on 20 Feb 1865, in ...

Re: tithe Applotment papers for Gortlurkaun

Hi Jan, I am glad to have been of some help. And, yes, Adrian Ingelby was right - Margaret was Margaret Moloney. The record of the baptism of Bridget on Feb 1, 1840, is quite clear: Bridget of Maurice McDonnell and Margaret Moloney. The sponsors are Patrick Moloney and Mary Moloney. The address is ...

Re: tithe Applotment papers for Gortlurkaun

Hi Jan,

I will start with your first reply to the post I made on Sat 6th. Thank you for explaining that your husband is descended from Mary McDonnell who married Michael Ryan and continued to live in Clashduff.
Yes, you are right in thinking that Bridget, who was born about 1840 and married in 1865 ...

Re: tithe Applotment papers for Gortlurkaun

Hi JPotter

I see a mistake in Adrian Ingleby’s chart of the family tree: John Burns should be James Burns (transcribed as “Buns” - see record of his marriage to Bridget McDonnell in 1865: https://www.irishgenealogy.ie/files/civil/marriage_returns/marriages_1865/11594/8266647.pdf.
James gives his ...

Re: tithe Applotment papers for Gortlurkaun

Hi JPotter

The information in a thread under topic-heading “Trying to locate my g/g/father Patrick McDonnell”, posted by Adrian Ingleby in Jun 2010 (https://clarelibraries.ie/localstudies/forums/clare-past/viewtopic.php?p=2715&hilit=Gortlurkaun#p2715), tallies with your information re Margaret ...

Re: tithe Applotment papers for Gortlurkaun

Hi JPotter,

Indeed I don't blame you for having difficulty! The parish is usually called Crusheen, but it was the parish of Inchicronan. And Gortlurkaun is transcribed as "Gurth*lane. There is only one name listed for the townland, i.e. Pat Griffy and partners: https://titheapplotmentbooks ...

Re: Information is wanted of Thomas McNamara, of Glandree,

Hi Jimbo,

In The Corporation Book of Ennis *, edited by Brian Ó Dálaigh (Irish Academic Press, 1990) I found a couple more snippets about the old jail in Gaol Street (now O’Connell Street) to add to yours:
(1) In the 1590s the old jail was the new jail: Ó Dálaigh writes in his introduction, “The ...

Re: Information is wanted of Thomas McNamara, of Glandree,

Correction: I did not take enough care over Kearsley boys in my reply above: Albert Victor (not Victor, as I have written) is not in the Limerick Industrial School in 1901 - just Edward.

Re: Information is wanted of Thomas McNamara, of Glandree,

Sorry, I'm wrong again:Firstly, P McGillan was Prison Warder before he joined the R.I.C. - not at the time of the 1901 census.

Secondly, the father of the Kearsley boys was William Kearsley, who died in the Ennis Infirmary in 1898, aged only 36; occupation: Sergeant Major (https://www ...

Re: Information is wanted of Thomas McNamara, of Glandree,

Hi Jimbo

Re Ennis Jail: I see that Mr Sharply, who was chief warder of Ennis jail at the time of Andy Hehir’s escape, died in 1897; address: Ennis Jail: https://www.irishgenealogy.ie/files/civil/deaths_returns/deaths_1897/05861/4661316.pdf. Which doesn’t explain where Ennis jail was located.
