Hi Jimbo,
In The Corporation Book of Ennis *, edited by Brian Ó Dálaigh (Irish Academic Press, 1990) I found a couple more snippets about the old jail in Gaol Street (now O’Connell Street) to add to yours:
(1) In the 1590s the old jail was the new jail: Ó Dálaigh writes in his introduction, “The ...

Re: Information is wanted of Thomas McNamara, of Glandree,
Correction: I did not take enough care over Kearsley boys in my reply above: Albert Victor (not Victor, as I have written) is not in the Limerick Industrial School in 1901 - just Edward.

Re: Information is wanted of Thomas McNamara, of Glandree,
Sorry, I'm wrong again:Firstly, P McGillan was Prison Warder before he joined the R.I.C. - not at the time of the 1901 census.
Secondly, the father of the Kearsley boys was William Kearsley, who died in the Ennis Infirmary in 1898, aged only 36; occupation: Sergeant Major (https://www ...

Hi Jimbo,
Re Ennis gaol, I wonder if, after 1880, prisoners were held temporarily in other accommodation prior to being transferred to Limerick/Mountjoy/Cork, etc. A newspaper report on the escape by Andy Hehir from a prison in Ennis in 1883 has puzzled me, because of the mention of a graveyard ...

Hi Jimbo
Thank you for that account of the death of John Flanagan in 1850; it throws light on the amount of red tape that had to be got through before a starving person could be admitted to the workhouse.

Hi Jimbo
I looked at that photo and thought at first that the building to the left was a part of a high wall, such as was built around the farmyards of big houses (also orchards, kitchen gardens and ornamental gardens - demesnes, also, were usually enclosed by high, well-built walls - many still be ...

Hi Hack,
I’ve failed to find the names of any of the Costello/Costelloe children. The records of births online only go to 1925 (www.irishgenealogy.ie), so the most I could expect to find were the names of the first two - one born 1923 (perhaps) and one born 1924 or 25 (perhaps).
The registration ...

Hi Hack,
Are you looking for the name of the daughter who married Dr. Costelloe?
If so, she was Catherine (Kitty) Barry.
Pauline Barry married Thomas O’Connor M.D., in October 1922 . Her bridesmaid was Kitty Barry: https://www.irishgenealogy.ie/files/civil/marriage_returns/marriages_1922/09213 ...

The Ancient Parish of Moynoe, nOrbraighe, Co. Clare , by Gerard Madden
A new book, by Gerard Madden, The Ancient Parish of Moynoe, nOrbraighe, Co. Clare (Croí Publishing, €25), was reviewed by Paul Clemens in Ticket ( The Irish Times Culture Magazine) on Saturday last. Madden considers this “forgotten” parish at different historical periods, “embracing its churches ...

Happy New Year. Yes, the 1926 census has been long awaited and will be interesting to see.

Hi Jimbo,
It’s good that you have mentioned that Mary Clune was baptised in Scarriff in1853. I made a mistake in my last posting when I gave the year as 1847.
You give a link to a Wikipedia article on the Battle of Aughrim and you may have noticed that it contains a mention of a painting of the ...

Thanks to Clare Libraries for making History Week talks available online
I’ve been listening to this year's History Week talks and found each one very interesting - see https://clarelibraries.ie/projects/history_programme/. Of special interest to me was Lucille Ellis’s talk on High Street and Parnell Street; some years ago I spent a good while trying to find where High ...
