I am looking for information about my Grandfather and Great-Grandfather who have the same name James Francis Stuart Donnellan. I have information from a site that states my Grandfather's date of birth as 1888 and he was registered in Ennystimon. I cannot obtain a copy of a birth certificate without my Great-Grandmother's name and maiden name. My Grandfather died at Ypres in 1915. I also think that my Great-Grandfather was a Draper.

There is lots of Donnellan/Ennistymon information on the Clare Library site. Just go to http://www.clarelibrary.ie/index.htm and type "Donnellan Ennistymon" into the "Search this website" field and off you go.

For example, see http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclar ... fithd2.htm for Donnellans in the 1855 Griffith's Valuation (there is a Bridget Donnellan listed in Ennistimon town).

I don't know whether you are familiar with the geography of the townlands but, if not, the Clare Library site has a comprehensive map facility to get your bearings (see http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclare/maps/index.htm). Also, the page at http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclar ... ettown.htm will give you a full background on Ennistymon with links to all sorts of local info and history. For example, check out the 1901 census there for Donnellans.

P.S. I suggest you edit the Subject line of your posting to make it more meaningful to browsers and increase the chances of your getting help (e.g. include the name Donnellan and the place Ennistymon/Ennistimon). Pretty well everyone on this forum is looking for their ancestors in County Clare

P.P.S. Sorry, once I had got the scent I couldn't stop. You said that "... I also think that my Great-Grandfather was a Draper.". Well, check out the Ennistymon school rolls at http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclar ... bs/d_e.htm and whaddya see ? Michael Donnellan, aged 12, parent a.......DRAPER ! Doesn't match the "James Francis Stuart" which you gave as a forename but looks as if you are getting warm. Maybe check out the photos in the Clare Library photo collection to see whether there is one of a draper's shop in Ennistymon. Or maybe one of the Ennistymon cracks on this forum will pop up to tell you where the shop is/was and provide a photo.

Hi Susan,

There is one James Donnellan birth registered in Ennistimon in June 1888, showing in the Civil Registration Index. FHL film number: 101062 Vol 4 page 203

You should be able to order a photocopy of this entry from GRO for 4 euro. You can find the order form at http://www.welfare.ie/en/Pages/Apply-fo ... cates.aspx
The order form says it requires mothers maiden name, but I think you would get it anyway if you quote the above FHL number, volume & page as that is all they need to find the record. Enter that info in the line requesting 'PPS number (if known)'. I have no idea what a PPS number is, but that's what I have done when ordering certificates and I've not had a problem. You will need to post or fax the form with a credit card payment, and they can send it back to you by either post or email.

Bear in mind that this may turn out not to be the man you are looking for, but even if that is the case, at least it will rule him out!
