Daniel Crottay, shot by bushrangers in 1862

Daniel Crottay, a Clare man, won the contract in December 1860 to carry the mail between Burrowa and Cowra, New South Wales on one day each week for the annual sum of £135. These days, the direct highway route between these two towns is 77 kilometres, but Daniel's route, which took him via Marengo and Bumbaldrie was probably more than 100km, presumably on horseback. His death notice, in the same edition, says that he "was barbarously shot through the head...... by two armed bushrangers,..."
