Ryan, Keough and Taylor

My congratulations on your an excellent web site.

Recently I became aware that the documentation concerning the remains of Patrick Keough, as recorded at Duke University, indicated that he was from Drumline Parish. Patrick Keough is interred in the original section of the Immaculate Conception Cemetery, in the Ryan family plot in Jim Thorpe (formerly Mauch Chunk) Pa.

After reviewing the 1855 Valuation I noted that in Drumline Parish, Drumline Townland there is but one Keough family headed by Sarah. In Drumline Parish there are three listings for Ryan; Pat of Smithtown, and Michael and William of Culleen. An examination of the Valuation Maps show the the Ryan's listings were within a stones throw of one and other, and that the Keough listing was 3 miles east of the Ryan's.

My GGrandfather Pat Ryan affirmed on his citizenship application that he arrived in the United States on May 1, 1849. Sadly no documentation has been found to indicate where GGF Pat lived in Ireland other than his listing of Tipperary County on several documents. However in our review of Tipperary County we cannot find anywhere a close geographical relationship between a Ryan and a Keough tenancy as we have found in Clare County. Deepening the conundrum is the remark that Pat Keough is from Drumline Parish and Townland while his headstone says Tipperary where we are unable to locate a Drumline Townland.

We have found a Patrick Keough sailing to the USA in 1846 aboard the Macedonia.

GGF Pat was married to a Mary Taylor and their first born, Matthew is listed as age 13 on the 1860 census in Mauch Chunk Pa. Matthew would have been born in Ireland in 1847.

Would records available to you indicate the 1855 family structures of the aforementioned Ryan's, Keough's and Taylor's?

It is our theory that Patrick and Pat grew up together and that Patrick Keough came first to the USA. Finding employment in Mauch Chunk he then wrote to Pat Ryan to bring his family. Both Pat's and Mary lived out their lives in Mauch Chunk. Pat Keough passed away on September 27, 1871, and my GGF Pat buried him in the family plot where he joined him in 1896 and where Mary joined them both in 1897. Three inseparable friends for eternity.

Any information you might provide will be of immense value.

Many Thanks;

Jim Ryan

Hi Jim,

according to the Tithe Applotment books of 1823-37 there is a townland by the name of Drumline in Templenoe Parish in County Tipperary. This townland seems to have disappeared since then. There is a Matthew Ryan living there during this time:

The name Matthew might be significant here - possibly Pat's father?

Griffith's Valuation shows a Patrick Keough as an occupier in the Parish of Kilfeakle in Tipperary which lies adjacent to the Parish of Templenoe:

According to Griffiths there is also a Taylor family living in the Kilfeakle parish at this time.

Obviously there is no hard evidence linking any of this but it might provide you with a few leads for further research. If Pat listed Tipperary as his home county on several documents as you say then this could be a better lead than looking at Drumline in County Clare.

As to why a Townland might disappear from the record see this extract from Clare Library website:

"standardisation of townland names and boundaries took place during the survey carried out by the Ordnance Survey of 1842. These townland names and boundaries were used in the Griffith's Valuation of 1855 and the 1901 Census (and subsequent censuses) and are still in use today. Many earlier townland names, such as those recorded in the Tithe Applotment Books (1823-1837), disappeared with their amalgamation or division following the Ordnance Survey."

Hope some of this helps and best of luck with your research.

Regards,

Darren

Darren;

It sure does help! Many thanks for the news / info. We have also found the Ryan, Keough, Taylor combination in Kilfeacle Parish in Tipperary, all within 1.5 miles of each other. I have joined a message board for Kilfeacle via "Ireland Reaching Out" to initiate pursuit of that potential. We'll see?

Be well;

Jim
