A bit of colour on your ancestor the Bank Manager. While reading "Patrick J Dillon's Diaries" today in the National Library I came across the following
20 May 1864 J.H. Milward fined for illegally gaffing a salmon.
Dillon was an Ennis Linen and Woollen Merchant who wrote these diaries from 1861 to 1869. He appears to have been an ardent Catholic with a sharp tongue which he used frequently on anyone who displeased him. A later entry in 1864 said that he had paid Milward rent for garden, dwelling and store. So it must have been pleasing to him to see his landlord and bank manager in trouble with the law!
(Gaff - a stick with a hook or barbed spear, for landing large fish)
