Book launch for Rita McCarthy’s book – Forgotten Lives;  The story of the County Clare Mother and Baby Home.  This book tells the little known story of the County Clare Nursery, a mother and baby home that operated in County Clare from 1922 to 1932.  Young pregnant women from all over County Clare were sent there.  It was situated in a section of the old workhouse in Kilrush which also operated as an orphanage. The building was deemed in 1922 ‘as a disgrace to the twentieth century’ and was not fit for human habitation.  This book examines the outcomes for all the women and children who sought refuge there and looks at the governance and day to day running of the institution.
