Libraries across Clare now have laptops and tablets available for use by members of the public in library branches. This equipment was made available by a recent grant from the Department of Rural & Community Affairs. Clare Libraries received funding of €110,115.29 to provide new computers, laptops, iPads and other ICT equipment. This was part of an overall €1.3 million package for public libraries across the country.
The investment, under the Libraries Capital Programme, will assist libraries in becoming more digitally inclusive. Communities across the county can benefit from the initiative – with a particular focus on supporting young people, elderly and the disadvantaged.
Announcing the rollout of equipment today, Helen Walsh, Clare County Librarian said: “I am delighted today to announce the further rollout of portable IT equipment in our branch network. This will enable Clare libraries to replace outdated PCs, laptops and iPads with new devices for the benefit of library users of all ages. This initiative is all about making our public libraries more accessible and digitally inclusive places.”
Councillor Alan O’Callaghan, Cathaoirleach of Clare also commented on the initiative
“It is essential that our libraries are able to provide up-to-date ICT infrastructure because they play a critical role in helping to support digital inclusion, as well as providing literacy and technology skills training for those looking for work”.
“It is also vital our libraries continue to support marginalised and disadvantaged communities to access government services.”
